'I’m going to do everything in 3D now. I’m going to shoot my daughter’s birthday party in 3D'.
James Cameron – Director, Avatar ($2.7 Billion worldwide box-office)
The latest digital technology has triggered a breakthrough that is transforming movie making – Digital 3D. It’s growing fast and providing a boost to an already boyant sector.
Since the release of Avatar in December 2009, it and three other 3D films have generated 33% of the total box office in the US. The rest has been made up by 127 other non-3D films. There are currently 4,000 3D theatres in the US, which is almost double what there was in 2009. Across the globe there were five times more 3D theatres last year than in 2008 and more in 2010. 3D films have been No.1 at the US box office for 10 of the 14 weeks in 2010. By 2012, according to the UK Film Council, digital 3D screens in the UK will have increased tenfold and Real D, one of the largest providers of digital 3D systems in the world, expects to have 15,000 3D cinemas worldwide by the end of the year.
FCF and 3D
Having completed our multi award-winning first film Kill Kill Faster Faster in June 2007, Full Circle Films are currently in post-production on The Mortician 3D, the first British independent digital 3D feature film scheduled for release the end of 2010. This project will hail the dawn of low-budget, independent 3D films, using the technology as a dramatic tool to immerse audiences in the world they are viewing.
The Future
Major home electronics manufacturers will be releasing some form of 3D-ready TV this year including LG, Samsung, Sony and Panasonic. Sky Broadcasting has announced 3D channels such as Sky Sports 3D & Sky Movies 3D. These are planned to be launched on the 1st October 2010.
22% of TV’s sold worldwide are expected to be 3D by the year 2014 and 1 in 4 households in the UK are expected to have a 3D TV by the year 2014. Telegraph.co.uk 22/04/2010
The Mortician 3D is one of 17 more 3D films due for release this year and there are approximately that many already scheduled for release in 2011. This number is likely to increase due to the popularity of the format.
